Applied tape triggers the body’s natural pain relief system. Tape lifts the hair, which lifts the skin activating mechanoreceptors (nerve endings) that then inhibit nociceptors (pain receptors). When applied following a manual therapy, elastic tape maintains a continuous stimulus on the area(s) applied, prolonging and possibly increasing the duration of the manual therapy. In other words, if you massage an area and then follow with tape, even if that application only lasts even a few hours, it is as if the massage lasts a few additional hours after the therapist has left.
